Start with what you are experiencing

You do not need to know which procedure you might need.

A new lump, recurring reflux or persistent upper abdominal discomfort is enough reason to seek advice. The first step is to understand your symptoms and work out what, if anything, needs to happen next.

Scope of practice

The right question.
The right plan.

Mr Steve Lindley provides assessment, endoscopy and surgical treatment for a range of general and upper gastrointestinal conditions. Surgical training in the South West of England and an 18-month fellowship in Sydney have informed his interest in advanced minimally invasive techniques, hernia surgery and complex abdominal wall reconstruction. Every recommendation is considered individually after clinical assessment.

02

Hernia surgery

Open and minimally invasive repair options for a range of groin and abdominal wall hernias.

  • Inguinal hernia repair: open, laparoscopic TEP or TAPP
  • Femoral hernia repair
  • Paediatric hernia and hydrocele surgery, reflecting my NHS practice
  • Incisional hernia repair
  • Epigastric, Spigelian, ventral and paraumbilical hernia repair
03

Abdominal wall reconstruction

Planning for complex, recurrent or large abdominal wall hernias where specialist reconstruction may be appropriate.

  • eTEP (enhanced-view totally extraperitoneal) techniques
  • Open component separation, including transversus abdominis release (TAR)
  • Pre-operative botulinum toxin injections (Botox) in selected cases
04

Specialist upper GI surgery

Surgical assessment and treatment planning for selected conditions affecting the upper gastrointestinal tract.

  • Hiatal hernia repair
  • Surgery for gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST)
  • Gastroenterostomy
06

Upper GI & interventional endoscopy

Diagnostic and interventional endoscopy as part of an individually considered plan of care.

  • Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (gastroscopy)
  • Transnasal endoscopy (TNE)
  • Interventional endoscopy, including dilatation

The procedures listed are scope of practice, not a recommendation that a procedure is suitable for every patient. The most appropriate treatment depends on individual assessment, diagnosis, previous surgery, overall health and personal circumstances. TEP = totally extraperitoneal; TAPP = transabdominal pre-peritoneal. Please confirm the final wording and scope with the practice and hospital teams before publication.

View my CV

I completed my surgical training in the South West of England before undertaking an 18-month fellowship in Sydney, Australia. Working in a high-volume upper gastrointestinal centre broadened my experience in advanced minimally invasive surgery and robotic techniques, and gave me opportunities to be involved in research and the development of approaches to abdominal wall reconstruction.

These experiences have shaped my clinical interests, but they have also reinforced a simple belief: good surgery is about more than the operation itself. It starts with listening, explaining the options clearly and being honest about benefits, risks and uncertainty. Sometimes the best plan is an operation; at other times, further investigation or non-operative care may be more appropriate.

Alongside clinical work, I contribute to surgical education and trauma training, including through the Royal College of Surgeons of England's national steering committee for Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS). I also take part in international hernia missions, with an emphasis on working alongside local teams, sharing knowledge and supporting sustainable skills. My wider clinical interests include motorsport medicine, where I have worked as a trackside doctor at national events and at international events involving Formula 1 and Formula E.

My aim is to be thorough, approachable and straightforward: to help you understand the problem, make sense of your choices and agree a plan that is right for you.

My approach

Good decisions start with a conversation.

Surgery is rarely just about a procedure. It is about understanding the problem, weighing up the alternatives and finding a sensible way forward for you.

Appointments should leave you with a clearer understanding of your diagnosis, the benefits and risks of the options, and what happens next. My involvement in surgical education, trauma work and multidisciplinary teams has reinforced how important it is to communicate clearly and plan carefully.
